Gates Wraps Up Regular Season with Shutout; Hosting Greece Olympia/Odyssey; 2-0

On Wednesday, the Gates Chili Spartans closed off a rough year with a high-note. With a play-in game ahead of them, they looked for a spark that would follow them into Sectionals. Gates had already played the Griffins once, taking that contest home, 11-6. This game was more timid, letting the pitchers duel it out.

In a late scratch, Cole Gorman took the bump for the Spartans. He didn’t allow this to deter him from having an outstanding outing. He threw five frames, fanning six batters, and allowing just four hits. Gavin Sweeney recorded the save for the team, coming in for two innings of relief, collecting a strikeout and allowing a single hit.

Not much was done offensively throughout the game. Leading Gates was Zac Antinelli, with a pair of singles. Cole Gorman recorded a lead-off double, which would be the only extra base-hit the game would see. Dylan Sweeney, Gavin Sweeney, and Jeremy Tantalo all collected hits for the Spartans. Dylan and Gavin Sweeney both scored off of errors with good heads-up base-running and hustle.

Ty Vanepps had an impressive day on the hill for the Griffins. He went all six innings, allowing just six hits and one earned run. He recorded eight K’s on the evening. Unfortunately, his offense couldn’t give him a cushion throughout the night.
