Women’s Hoops Handles Alfred For 11th-Straight Win, 74-61

ALFRED, NY – The Nazareth women’s basketball team completed the weekend sweep for its conference games on Saturday, downing Alfred 74-61 to push its win streak to 11 games.
The 11-straight wins marks the most since the 1989-90 season when the Golden Flyers strung together 12-straight wins. Katie MacLachlan led all scorers with 20 points, six assists, and six rebounds.

Nazareth is now 12-1 overall and remains perfect in Empire 8 play at 4-0. Alfred is now 4-8 and –4 in Empire 8 play.

It was a relatively close game throughout with Nazareth eventually pulling away in the fourth quarter.

Nazareth’s largest lead of the first half was nine points after Sarina McDowell had a bucket in the paint, making it 30-21 with under five minutes to play. She had 10 points and five rebounds. The visitors led 35-30 at the half.

A strong start to the third, including two free throws from MacLachlan, put up the Golden Flyers 45-33. Nazareth led by eight after three quarters.

Seven-straight points to start the fourth helped Nazareth build its biggest advantage for the game at 61-46 following a Madilann Johnson triple.

Alfred was able to trim the lead to seven points at the midway point but MacLachlan’s third 3-pointer jump started a 7-0 run to help regain the contest.

Molly Benetti had another solid game with 16 points on 8-for-16, to go along with nine rebounds. Reigning Empire 8 Player of the Week, Olivia Dobrovosky, had 14 points on 7-for-13 with seven rebounds.

Nazareth returns home on Tuesday, hosting Utica at 5:30 p.m.
