Balanced Attack Keeps Nazareth Undefeated in Empire 8 Play
ELMIRA, NY – Six players including all five starters scored in double figures Friday night for the Nazareth University Men’s Basketball team as the Golden Flyers delivered an 88-69 victory over Elmira to remain unbeaten in Empire 8 play.
Nazareth (6-5 overall, 3-0 Empire 8) outscored Elmira (4-7, 0-2 Empire 8) by 11 points in the first half to take a 39-28 lead and then poured in 49 points in the second half to pull away for the victory.
Junior Jack Broderick led the way with 16 points on 6-for-12 shooting from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Fellow junior Luke Insley added 14 points and four assists, graduate student Jordan Haggard added 13 while fellow graduate student Logan Blankenberg and sophomore Tyler Putney each scored 11 points and sophomore Jaylen Savage rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
Blankenberg had a team-leading nine rebounds and Broderick added seven rebounds.
The Golden Flyers connected on 36-of-74 (48.6 percent) from the field and were nearly perfect from the free throw line hitting eight of nine attempts. Nazareth used a strong inside game with 52 points in the paint and had a 56-46 rebounding edge to overpower the Soaring Eagles.Nazareth continues the Empire 8 road trip with a 4 p.m. game at Alfred Saturday.
Men’s Hoops Runs Past Alfred, 76-58
Logan Blankenberg led the way with 19 points.
ALFRED, NY – Graduate student Logan Blankenberg led all scorers with 19 points on 8-for-16 from the floor to help Nazareth to a 76-58 victory at Alfred on Saturday.
Nazareth has won three straight and is now 7-5 overall, 4-0 in conference play, while Alfred drops to 4-9 overall and 1-3 in Empire 8 play.
Luke Insley topped double-digit assists for the second time this season, setting a career-high with 11.
Nazareth led 45-35 at the break.
The Golden Flyers led by double digits for most of the second half aside from a three-minute spurt early in the second half.
With the lead cut to seven points, Blankenberg scored four-straight points to give the visitors an 11-point lead. Nazareth led by double figures the rest of the way.
Tyler Putney scored in double figures for the third-straight game, scoring his Nazareth career-high with 17 points.
Sophomore Jaylen Savage contributed 14 points on 6-for-13. Jordan Haggard notched nine points.
Nazareth returns home on Tuesday, hosting Utica at 5:30 p.m. Utica (2-0) is one of four teams that remain unbeaten in conference play, including St. John Fisher (4-0) and Keuka (3-0).
