Cardinals Knock Off Saxons To Start New Year, 85-63
ALFRED, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men’s basketball team were on the road on Friday night to play their first game of 2024. They took on Empire 8 opposition, Alfred University, and earned the win by a final score of 85-63.
The Saxons got off to a fast start, taking a 10-3 lead in the opening four minutes. The Cardinals quickly got back into the game thanks to three-pointers by Jack Foley and Joe Morrell. The lead was extended to double digits with 10:37 to play in the first half when Foley knocked down another three to put the team ahead 22-13. The Saxons tried to fight back but key baskets by Matt Lettko and Daniel Cook gave Fisher a 43-26 advantage going into halftime.
The Cardinals came out on fire in the second half, pushing their lead to 20+ points thanks to a layup by Connor Recore. Alfred University got back into the game with 10:53 to go, cutting the deficit to 14, but layups by Brad Fowler and Connor Williams pushed Fisher back in front by 19 a minute later. The Cardinals walked away with a comfortable 85-73 win.
Cook scored 13 points, while collecting nine rebounds. Recore added 13 points of his own and grabbed six rebounds. McRoy was the third Cardinal with double-digit scoring, contributing 10 points.
Fisher remain on the road on Saturday against Elmira College for back-to-back Empire 8 games. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.

Cardinals Hold Off Elmira, 108-95
ELMIRA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher University men’s basketball team were on the road on Saturday and completed a weekend sweep of their Empire 8 opponents, knocking off Elmira College 108-95. The Cardinals now move 8-5 on the season and 4-0 against conference opposition.
Fisher jumped out to an early 12-4 lead thanks to makes by Jack Foley, Daniel Cook and Cole Thompson. Elmira kept it close, but at the 13:36 mark, the Cardinals began to pull away. A Max Schneider three-pointer put the team in front 22-12, before a three-point play by Connor Williamspushed the lead to 18. Joe Morrell later knocked down a three of his own and made the score 33-12. The Soaring Eagles stabilized and cut their deficit to single digits with three minutes to play, but the Cardinals reclaimed a 54-39 lead going into the break.
As the second-half continued, the Cardinals pushed their lead to as high as 25 points with 14:46 remaining. Elmira continued to push back, but the two units traded baskets throughout the half and Fisher was able to secure the 108-95 victory.
The Cardinals had four players finish with double-digit scoring. Cook and Brad Fowler each had 18 points, with Cook adding five rebounds, five assists and four steals. Foley tallied 14 points on 4-for-9 shooting from behind the arc. McRoy contributed 12 points and five rebounds.
Fisher returns home on Tuesday, Jan. 9 for a matchup against Keuka College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
