Redhawks Will Open ECC Play On Wednesday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan University men’s soccer team found itself exactly where it wanted to be five minutes into Saturday’s non-conference match with Saint Anselm College.

The Redhawks started quickly, capitalizing on a strong buildup to take a 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Luke Hanes. Saint Anselm, however, responded with two goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half and held on for a 2-1 victory.

“It was a great start to the game, but we need to learn how to close these games out,” Roberts coach Scott Reber said. “The margin between winning and losing is small and we need to find ways to cover that margin.”

The Redhawks’ goal was a beauty. Freshman Cooper Kerridge controlled the ball at midfield, made a move and sent a pass to Tamas Nagy in the middle. Nagy ran onto the ball and slid a slick pass to Hanes, who sent a shot just under the crossbar on the near side.

Roberts (0-3-1) had other chances in the first half and  made a strong push after the Hawks took the lead, but could not generate the equalizer. The Redhawks best opportunity came on a penalty kick with 1:17 to play, but goalkeeper David Hood made a diving stop for Saint Anselm.

Caleb DaSilva made six saves for Roberts.

The Redhawks open East Coast Conference play at 7 p.m. Wednesday against D’Youville at Redhawks Stadium.
