Men’s Basketball Holds on for Home Win Over Poly, Beckett Joins the 1,000 Point Club

BROCKPORT, NY – The SUNY Brockport men’s basketball team defeated the SUNY Poly Wildcats in an 81-80 thriller on Tuesday evening. The Golden Eagles improved to 5-7 with a 3-1 record in Empire 8 conference play thus far.

Mekhi Beckett reached a huge career milestone in the contest, scoring his 1000th career point. Beckett became the 25th player in program history to do so. He finished with 12 points on the night.

Tony Arnold led Brockport in scoring with 14 while making a career-high 10 free throws on the night.

Jakhi Lucas finished with 12 points while Nathaniel Gordon and Zachary Rice netted 10 a piece. Alex Tavarez added nine points as well.

SUNY Poly opened the contest hot from the field as they opened a 10-4 lead in the opening minutes. Brockport brought pressure shortly after to bring about a four-minute scoring drought for the Wildcats.

Brockport found their stride after being down early with three-pointers from Rice and Beckett gave them a 17-12 lead.

The Golden Eagles continued to open their lead as the first half progressed with stellar defense, holding Poly to 9-32 from the field. The opening frame concluded with Brockport leading 38-25.

The first half was a balanced scoring effort for Brockport with five players totaling five or more points, with Rice leading all scorers with eight points on a pair of threes and a fastbreak finish from close range.

Poly matched Brockport’s first half intensity in the second and brought themselves momentum in the second frame. Scoring largely from the interior and switching to a zone defense, the Wildcats clawed to within two points after 10 minutes of play in the second.

The latter half of the second was back and forth with multiple lead changes occurring.

Gordon was clutch in the closing minutes, draining two three-pointers and a pair of free throws to put Brockport ahead by four with 18 seconds remaining.

Poly answered right back as Merchant Jr. would slash into the lane and hit a tough layup bringing it back to within two points. The Wildcats would then force a steal and draw a foul with Daimarr Miller having a chance to tie the game. Miller would ultimately miss the second free throw forcing Poly to foul and stop the clock.

Brockport would make their final four free throws to go up by four before Cheickne Toure hit a three at the buzzer bringing the final score to 81-80.

The Golden Eagles are back in action on Friday, January 17th at 7:30 as they travel to Elmira for more Empire 8 conference play.
