After a career-year on the court, University of Rochester senior guard Abby Gress of the women’s basketball team has been named an Honorable Mention All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), as announced on Wednesday.

Gress becomes Rochester’s 23rd all-time All-American in women’s basketball and makes it three straight seasons the Yellowjackets have had an All-America honoree. Last season, Katie Titus was a First Team selection, while in 2022, Julianna Okoniewski earned AA recognition. Overall, Gress is 15th different player in team history to be named an All-American.

The St. James, NY native has already earned conference and regional honors this season, being named Second Team All-UAA and Third Team All-Region 3 by D3hoops.com. The All-America award is the first of her career.

“We are very excited that Abby was recognized as a 2024 WBCA NCAA Division III All-American,” says head coach Jim Scheible. “She was a true leader for us in so many ways and I couldn’t be more proud of her!”

This season, Gress led the Yellowjackets with a scoring average of 13.7 points per game. She added a team high 7.2 rebounds per game and was second in assists (55) along with being first in steals (44), all of which were new career-bests.

In addition, the senior had 15 or more points on 12 occasions, scored 20 points in three contests and closed the season with a career-high 23 points in an upset win over #22 Emory. She was picked to both the UR Chuck Resler Tournament and Mark’s Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout All-Tournament teams, averaging 13.0 points per game and 9.0 rebounds per game in those events.

Gress has also been recognized off the court this year, being honored as a Lysle ‘Spike’ Garnish Scholar in the fall and being named to the UAA All-Academic Team for her performance in the classroom.
