AUBURN, N.Y. – The Finger Lakes baseball season came to a close Saturday afternoon with an 18-6 loss to nationally ranked #2 SUNY Niagara in the Region III title game, but the road that led there was one of the most memorable in program history.

Finger Lakes finished the year 38-18 overall and 16-6 in conference play, marking the 3rd-most wins in program history. Their playoff run included back-to-back victories over Cayuga Community College in the Sub-Regional round and a pair of statement wins against nationally ranked #5 Hudson Valley and #6 Herkimer during the Region III Final Four.

Even in Saturday’s loss to the undefeated Thunderwolves, the Lakers continued to fight. Brennen Russo (East Irondequoit, N.Y./Eastridge) launched his 9th home run of the season, while Joey Sanna (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) added a 3-run blast in the eighth to give the Lakers a late spark.

Throughout the spring, the Lakers set new standards across the board. They finished the season with the 2nd-most shutouts in a year, the 2nd-most home runs, the 3rd-most total runs scored, the 4th-most stolen bases, and the 2nd-most hits by a team in program history. Their .340 team batting average tied for 3rd-best all-time, and the pitching staff combined for the 3rd-most saves in a single season.

Individually, several Lakers left their mark. Brennen Russo ended the year with 64 hits (8th-most in a single season), 47 RBIs (4th), 30 stolen bases (7th), and 42 walks (2nd), while finishing with a .512 on-base percentage—11th best in program history. Markus Brehm (Wayland, N.Y./Wayland-Cohocton) tallied 67 hits (5th), 42 RBIs (10th), 31 stolen bases (6th), and 19 doubles—2nd all-time.

On the mound, Nathan Power (Victor, N.Y./Victor) led the rotation with 9 wins, tying for the 2nd-most in a season, and also tied the program record for most starts (10). Sophomore pitchers Ian Goodness(Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) and Aiden Reed (Shortsville, N.Y./Red Jacket)each finished their careers with 8 wins, while Caleb Wilson (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas)capped his season with 9 career wins, tied for 3rd all-time. Goodness also climbed to 8th in career strikeouts (75) and tied the program record with 17 career starts.

Sophomores Christian Morrison (Palmyra, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) and Jeffrey Broadnax (Hilton, N.Y./Hilton) etched their names into the record book for career walks, ranking 10th (34) and 6th (42), respectively.

The Lakers’ April 27th sweep of Corning Community College proved to be a showcase of their offensive firepower, producing the 5th-most runs in a single game (22), tying the program record for hits in a game (21), setting a new mark for doubles in a game (8), and notching the 2nd-most RBIs in a game (18).

Finger Lakes closes the season with its first Region III championship game appearance since 2019 and one of the most complete statistical years the program has ever seen. With a strong group of returners and incoming freshman, the Lakers will look to make their mark once again in Region III play in 2026.
