Savage and Insley Score 57 Points in a 83-76 Overtime Win Over RIT
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Jaylen Savage and Luke Insley combined for 57 of Nazareth’s 83 points in an 83-76 overtime win on Thursday night against RIT in the first round of the Mark’s Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout. Savage finished the game with 33 points, while Insley added 24.
In the first half, the game was very evenly matched, neither team holding more than a five-point lead until under eight minutes left in the half, when RIT went up 25-20, and then 27-20. Thought Nazareth dropped some buckets to cut the lead a few times, RIT was able to hold the seven-point lead (39-32) heading into the second half.
Savage led the scoring efforts in the first half with 12, followed closely behind by Insley with nine. Will Burnett tallied four, while teammates Ryan Broderick, Zachary McFarland, and Merritt Holly each added two. Gabe Lucarelli dropped in a free-throw to add one point.
Nazareth came out of halftime ready to run, taking the lead in under three minutes of play to shift the momentum at the beginning of the second. Naz and RIT then went on trading buckets, with neither team holding more than a five-point lead at a time. With under two minutes left in the half, RIT up 68-67, Savage had a good tip-in and-one to add three points and take the lead by two. With 24 seconds left, RIT hit a jumper to tie the game and push it into overtime.
Savage took over in the second half with 20 points, including two threes. Insley added six more points in the half. Liam Hopwood and Burnett each added four in the second. Tyler Putney joined the scoring efforts in the second half with a three.
Insley went into overtime hot off the jump with six points in under three minutes of play including two lays and two free-throws to allow Nazareth to jump to an early overtime lead. Though RIT tried to close the gap, more Nazareth buckets made the deficit too much to come back from and Nazareth closed the game with two more Insley free throws and a final score of 83-76.
In overtime, Insley scored a total of nine points, while Hopwood and Putney each added two.
Savage led the scoring efforts with 33 points on the game, going 14-33 from the field, including 2-4 from the arc, while also adding five rebounds and three steals. Insley tallied 24 points on the game, going 9-15 from the field and adding two assists and two steals. Burnett went 4-8 from the field to add eight points and two rebounds.
Hopwood led the rebounding efforts with 14, including six offensive and eight defensive, while also tallying six points. Putney added to the rebounding efforts with 12 defensive rebounds, while dropping five total points.
Other scorers for Nazareth included McFarland, R. Broderick, and Holly who each had a pair of points, and Lucarelli who added one free-throw.
As a team, Nazareth shot 41.3% from the field, 20% from the arc, and 82.4% from the free-throw line.
The Golden Flyers will return to action on Saturday at 8 p.m. for the next round of the Mark’s Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout against the host University of Rochester.
