Tyler Putney Leads Men’s Basketball to a Victory with a Double-Double

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior Tyler Putney led the Golden Flyers to a victory over the SUNY Potsdam Bears in the first game of the season with a double-double in the 82-73 win. Putney had a career-high 23 points and 11 rebounds in the game for Nazareth.

Nazareth opens its season with a 1-0 record.

Three players for Nazareth were in the double figures including Luke Insley who had 18 points and six assists, Jaylen Savage with 17 points and three rebounds, and Putney with his double-double. Putney was 7-16 in field goals, including 6-12 from the arc, while Insley was 8-11 in field goals. Savage was 4-14 in field goals, and 1-4 from the arc, while also adding eight free points

Nazareth came out strong in the first half, earning a 21-11 lead in under 10 minutes of game play. These 21 points were put together by Putney, Zachary McFarlandRyan BroderickMerritt Holly and Solomon McFarlane.

After the early lead, Insley, Putney, Savage, McFarland, and Marcus Shepard were all able to buy some more buckets for the Golden Flyers, earning a 44-32 lead at the half.

Under eight minutes into the second half, the Bears were able to close the gap to one point, and one minute later Potsdam had the lead. The two teams then traded baskets one by one, each team racking up four buckets. Nazareth was able to regain the lead with three uninterrupted scoring plays including a jumper from Putney, a layup from Insley, and two made free-throws by Savage.

Up 63-62, with five minutes of game play left, the teams began trading buckets again. With one minute left, Nazareth found itself up 76-73. A good lay from Liam Hopwood put the Golden Flyers up by five with 45 seconds left. Savage added to the lead with four more free-throws as the Bears tried to slow down the clock with fouls.

Nazareth closed out the game with a victory and a score of 82-73.

The Golden Flyers will play again on Saturday, November 9th at 3 p.m. in the Championship round of the Mike Daley Memorial Tournament.

Putney and Savage named to the All-Tournament Team as Nazareth drops the Championship Round to RPI

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Golden Flyers fell to RPI 60-54 in another close game this weekend in the Championship round of the Mike Daley Memorial Tournament. Tyler Putney and Jaylen Savage were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Nazareth’s opening weekend brings a 1-1 record as the Golden Flyers look ahead to its next tournament.

Two players for Nazareth were in the double figures including Jaylen Savage with 19 and Luke Insley with 12. Insley also led the team in assists with five.

The game was low-scoring to start, neither team breaking double-digits until midway through the first half. Leading to the second half, the game was very back-and-forth with the Golden Flyers and Engineers exchanging buckets. With two and a half minutes to go in the first, Tyler Putney dropped in a free throw to put Nazareth up one. A three from Putney and another from Zach McFarland, as well as a good lay from RPI brought the Golden Flyers to a 26-21 lead heading into halftime.

In under five minutes of second-half play, RPI was able to string together a few good runs to take the lead. The two teams then battled back and forth, taking leads from each other for the next eight-or-so minutes of play. RPI was finally able to get a two-possession advantage over Nazareth with 7:25 left to play. Though the Golden Flyers battled through the end, they were not able to recover from the deficit and dropped the game 60-54.

The Golden Flyers will play again on Thursday, November 21, at 6 p.m. against RIT at the University of Rochester in the first round of Mark’s Pizzeria Crosstown Challenge.

Merritt Holly Named Empire 8 Rookie of the Week for Men’s Basketball

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Merritt Holly has been named Empire 8’s Rookie of the Week for men’s basketball after a stellar first appearance in a Golden Flyer uniform this past weekend.

In 23 minutes played this weekend for Nazareth, Holly tallied 11 points and eight rebounds.

In Friday’s 82-73 win over SUNY Potsdam, Holly was 4-6 in field goals, as well as adding three offensive rebounds and four defensive rebounds.

In Saturday’s loss in the championship round of the Mike Daley Memorial tournament, he added another bucket and a rebound.

With this weekend’s performance, Holly sits at a field goal percentage of .556, with a 5.5 points per game average.

Holly and the rest of the Golden Flyers men’s basketball team will return to the floor on November 21st at 6 p.m. to take on RIT at University of Rochester in the first round of the Mark’s Pizzeria Crosstown Challenge.
