Men’s Soccer Beats Elmira 3-0

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Joey Avallone scored twice, Jack Tamburino tallied his first collegiate goal and keeper Christian Burkhart recorded his third clean sheet of the season in St. John Fisher’s 3-0 win over Elmira College on Saturday afternoon at Growney Stadium.

The Cardinals improved to 2-1-2 and 1-0 overall in the Empire 8. The Soaring Eagles, who beat Fisher in last year’s E8 title game, lost their second straight contest and fell to 0-4-1 (0-1 in league play).

After a scoreless first half, Fisher broke through in the final 45 minutes with a season-high three goals.

Avallone, a fifth-year senior, scored his first of the season about two minutes in on an assist from Reese Powers, who recorded his third point of the season. Tamburino found the back of the net at the 74:13 mark on a feed from Aidan Furmansky, who tallied his first collegiate point, to put the Cardinals ahead 2-0. https://www.instagram.com/reel/C_6R-Z1P7P2/embed/captioned/?cr=1&v=14&wp=1044&rd=https%3A%2F%2Fsjfathletics.com&rp=%2Fnews%2F2024%2F9%2F14%2Fmens-soccer-beats-elmira-3-0.aspx#%7B%22ci%22%3A0%2C%22os%22%3A1309%2C%22ls%22%3A923%2C%22le%22%3A1276%7D

To put a cap on the victory for Fisher, Avallone scored his second goal of the contest on an assist from Riley Rease in the 84th minute. It was his first collegiate multi-goal performance and his fifth career multi-point effort.

Burkhart made two saves as he recorded his fourth career shutout. He’s allowed only two goals through five games this season.

The Cardinals improved to 14-2 against Elmira since the 2005 season.
