Brockport Takes Two Over Oneonta in Hometown Heroes Doubleheader
Brockport, NY – The Golden Eagles went two for two Saturday against the Oneonta Red Dragon to start the 3-game series. Brockport is now 21-16 overall and 8-9 in the SUNYAC conference with one final game left to play in the regular season.
Game One –Justin DelVecchio started on the bump for the Golden Eagles pitching 4.2 innings. Justin struck out six batters, let up eight hits, one run and one walk across the 22 batters faced.
Brockport got the ball rolling in the bottom of the first, with the first run of the game. Josh Indekreached first on an error by the third basemen. Frank Vanzillotta sacrificed on a bunt helping Indek advance to second. Zach Eldred grounded on to the second basemen and Indek and advanced to third. Cole Traudt singled and batted Indek for the first run of the day.
Oneonta scored iots first run in the top of the fourth tying up the score 1-1. The Red Dragons scored two more runs in the top of sixth inning, earning their first lead of the day. Brockport trailed 3-1 heading into the top of the seventh.
Josh Indek brought the Golden Eagles back into the game with a 3 RBI single, in the bottom of the eighth. Nick Mahar singled to first followed by TJ Strevell getting hit by a pitch. With one out left Brian Tietjen was walked to load the bases. Indek was up to bat and singled to left field bringing home all three runners and putting the Golden Eagle
Colin Pytlak pitched 2.1 innings, striking out four batters, letting up three hits, two runs and one walk. Angelo Agro pitched a hell of an inning earning the win and helping fend of the Red Dragons. Angelo struck out four batters, let up one hit and one walk throughout his 2.0 innings.
Game Two –Matt McGowan started game two on the bump for the golden eagles pitching 4.0 innings for the Green and Gold. McGowan let up three runs, three walks, five hits and six strikeouts.
Brockport took the lead quickly in game two. David Belsito started the game with a walk followed by a bunt single from Mahar. With Belsito on second, Mansell hit a bunt single leading to a bases loaded situation. Kyle Blake was hit by pitch bringing home Belsito for the first run of the day. Wing reached first on a fielder’s choice and advanced to second on an error by the shortstop. Mansell was tagged out at third and Mahar came home for the second run of the game.
Brockport kept it going with a 4-run inning in the bottom of the third. Vanzillotta singled, followed by a double from Traudt that put him on third. Belsito singled on a bunt batting in Vanzillotta and putting Traudt on third. Belsito stole second and Mahar was walked. Mansell reached on a fielder’s choice that tagged out Belsito but brought Traudt home. Blake doubled batting in both Mansell and Mahar for the fifth and sixth runs of the game.
Oneonta scored three runs in the top of the fifth cutting the Golden Eagles lead in half. Josh Indekstarted the bottom of the sixth inning with a walk, followed by him stealing second. Frank Vanzillottadoubled and brought Indek home for run number seven.
Brian Doherty pitched 3.0 innings for the Green and Gold striking out five batters, letting up one walk across the 11 batters faced. Michael Heilig pitched the final two innings of the game striking out four batters, letting up three hits across the nine batters faced.
Brockport returns to the Clark V. Whited Complex tomorrow for the final game of the three-game series and the program’s final appearance in the SUNYAC before transitioning to the Empire 8 next season.
