Women’s Basketball falls at Houghton, 65-58

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher women’s basketball team lost at Houghton on Thursday, 65-58.

The defeat ends the Cardinals’ 18-game win streak and is the team’s first conference loss since Jan. 8, 2021 against Hartwick.

The Cardinals initially jumped to a lead, twice leading by 12 points before ending the first quarter up 18-11.

The game took a bad turn in the second quarter, however, with Houghton going on an 18-0 run over the first eight minutes of the quarter, ultimately outscoring the Cardinals 19-4 in the quarter to go into the half up 30-22.

The Cardinals scraped their way back over the next quarter and a half, ultimately making it a one-point game, 50-49, with 6:19 left. Houghton then pulled further ahead, 56-49, only for the Cardinals to again close the gap to 56-54 with just over two minutes left.

The Highlanders outscored Fisher, 9-4, the rest of the way, however, to pull out the victory.

Freshman forward Joleen Lusk led the Cardinals with a double-double, scoring 18 points while pulling in 15 rebounds. Senior guard Claire Kruszka also scored double digits, with 13 points.

Defensively, senior forward Lauren Nawojski had two blocks.

The Cardinals now go on a break until next Saturday, Feb. 17, when they host arch-rival Nazareth University. Tipoff is 2 p.m.
