Men’s Basketball beats St. Lawrence, 56-44

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – RIT junior forward Josiah Turner scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Tigers to a 56-44 win over St. Lawrence, Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Junior forward Brock Bowen hit back-to-back three-pointers early in the first half to give the Tigers an early 6-0 lead.
• Turner scored off an assist from junior forward Jackson Otis with 15:55 remaining to extend the RIT lead to 8-2, while junior guard Chase Dickensscored to give the Tigers a 12-5 lead.
• Gavin Macauley scored on a driving layup to cut the RIT lead to 14-9, and Carter Storey hit a three-pointer with 9:48 remaining to cut the Tigers lead to 14-12.
• Otis scored off an assist from senior guard Keegan Ocorr to give RIT a 19-14 lead, while senior guard Mark Osimescored to make it a 22-14 RIT lead.
• First year guard Brody Brown gave RIT a 25-15 lead on his three-pointer with 5:05 to play.
• Ocorr scored with 2:26 remaining to give RIT a 28-18 lead and St. Lawrence’s Andrew Cowan hit a pair of free throws with 1:44 to play to make the score 28-22, RIT at halftime.

Rochester, NY – Freshman point guard Steve DeRegishit four free throws in the final 20 seconds to help clinch an overtime win for the Clarkson University Men’s Basketball team, as the Golden Knights claimed a 99-93 victory against RIT on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 12-9 overall and 6-8 in the Liberty League, while the Tigers saw their mark even out at 10-10 and 6-7 in conference games. The win was Clarkson’s fourth in five overtime contests this season.

The Knights fell behind early in the opening minute, but then began a strong stretch of 3-point shooting that would last most of the first half. Braeden Burnsburied a 3-pointer, Steve DeRegis made another, and Burns knocked down his second 3-pointer in a stretch of two minutes to put the Knights up by four. Clarkson knocked down four more 3-pointers in less than three minutes, with DeRegis, Ryan Miles-Ferguson, Jack Dalgety, and Burns hitting long shots for a 23-10 lead. That margin would expand to 28-12 near the midway point of the half as the Clarkson offense was cruising.

Although Clarkson kept on scoring, RIT began to chip away at the gap between the two teams, crawling back to within seven on a run of six straight points from Josiah Turner with just under six minutes to go. RIT continued to go to Turner, and RIT eventually came all the way back to take the lead on a pair of free throws from Turner with just 1:18 to go. Although Ryan Miles-Ferguson would make a layup to help Clarkson regain the lead, a last second layup from Kenny Wilburn allowed the Tigers to take a one-point lead heading into the locker room.

Neither team would go on big runs in the second half as the teams traded leads through the first portion of the second half. Clarkson would eventually gain a six-point lead at the 614 mark when Braeden Burnshit a 3-pointer. However, the Tigers responded with five quick points to close the gap once again. Down the stretch, Ryan Miles-Ferguson hit a key 3-pointer, rolling off a screen for a make from the wing with 1:33 to go, putting the tally at 85-80, but at the other end Matt Caggiano had his 3-pointer rattle in to make it a one-possession game again. Jack Dalgety hit a couple of free throws to put Clarkson up by three. The lead wouldn’t last, as Caggiano fumbled a kick out to the top of the key, but quickly gathered himself to hit a 3-pointer with 15 seconds remaining. Despite plenty of contact in the lane on Finn Cork on a last second shot, the game would go to overtime.

For all the scoring in regulation, the teams were quiet in overtime. It wasn’t until the midway point of the five-minute extra session that either team could hit a long-range shot, as Jack Dalgety nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key to put the Knights up three. The teams traded free throws for the next two minutes. With the gap at two, Caggiano turned the ball over in the lane in an attempt to tie the game, and the Knights took advantage, making free throws down the stretch to pick up the key conference victory.

Ryan Miles-Ferguson scored 26 points and had five assists before fouling out in overtime, while Braeden Burns fought foul trouble all game, but still finished with 21 points, including five 3-pointers, in just 27 minutes of play. Jack Dalgety also scored 17 points and snagged nine rebounds, while both Finn Corkand Steve DeRegis scored 12.

For RIT, Kenny Wilburn scored 25 points on 11-for-17 shooting, doing so in only 21 minutes. Josiah Turner had a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds and Brock Bowen scored 11 points.
