Cardinals Secure First Win Of The Season
HARRISBURG, PA – The St. John Fisher University men’s basketball team were on the road on Saturday for day one of the Harrisburg Tip-Off tournament. The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 100-72 win over Lebanon Valley, their first of the new season.
Jack Foley kicked it off with a made three, before Daniel Cook scored seven straight points to put the Cardinals up 10-0 to start the game. Lebanon Valley cut the deficit back to single digits, but Fisher began to expand their advantage starting with a layup by Connor Recore to make the score 23-11. A Foley three and layups by Cook and Recore put the lead at 30-11. A couple of minutes later, Cole Thompson knocked down a three to put the lead at 21 points with 6:21 to play in the first. The flying Dutchman stopped the run, but Fisher still held a 46-29 lead at halftime.
Coming out of the break, the two teams traded scoring, with Lebanon Valley trimming their deficit to 12 points with 13:30 on the clock. The Cardinals saw their offense pick up, with scores by Matt Lettko getting the team back in front by 18, before a Brad Fowler layup got it to 20 with just under 10 minutes to play. The Dutchmen once again fought back, but three pointers by Thompson and record put the score at 88-62 late in the fourth. The lead never fell back under 20 and Fisher cruised to a 101-72 victory.
Cook led the way with 17 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Foley shot an efficient 4-for-6 from three to total 16 points on the afternoon. Recore had an efficient 13 points with eight rebounds as well. Both Thompson and Fowler contributed 12 points, with Connor Williams adding 10 as well.
Up next for Fisher is a matchup with the hosts, Penn State Harrisburg on Sunday, Nov. 12 with tip-off set for 3 p.m.
