Field Hockey Clipped In Shootout vs. Stevens

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPEX – Visiting Stevens Institute of Technology capitalized on a late penalty stroke goal in regulation and edged the 18th-ranked University of Rochester field hockey team via the shootout, winning 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The Ducks (3-0) converted on three of four shootout attempts and held Rochester (2-1) off the board in its first three attempts, clinching the victory when Lauren Flynn found the back of the cage.

UR keeper Kara Houston made a career-high 11 saves in the loss, turning away six of those shots in the two ten-minute overtime sessions. At the other end, Ducks keeper Maria Dante was terrific as well, stopping 17 shots, seven coming in OT.

Neither team could muster much offense in the opening quarter, with Rochester taking the only three shots over the first 15 minutes.

The score remained scoreless after the second quarter which featured multiple UR corners in the early going and a pair of Stevens corners in the final minute.

During the Rochester rush in the second, Zoe Conomikes and Bella Militi each had chances on a scramble in front, but Dante turned the pair of shots away. Kayla Ballas also was set up on a breakaway after a solid pass from Sofia LaFalce, but Dante stood tall again, keeping the game tied.

Four minutes into the second half, sophomore Maeve Fogarty broke the draw with her team leading fourth goal of the season. Fogarty one-timed a quick shot six yards out following a cross pass by teammate Anya Arseneau.

Two minutes after the Fogarty goal, Rochester was awarded a penalty stroke after Dante covered up the ball after a UR shot. The Stevens keeper made up for her error though, stopping Ballas’ stroke attempt and keeping the lead at one.

The Yellowjackets kept up the pressure in the early part of the fourth quarter but couldn’t build on their lead, with Stevens defending away three shots and two corners in the opening two minutes.

In the 55th minute, Stevens gained a penalty corner and after Alisyn Fink’s shot was blocked off the goal line by a UR player illegally, the Ducks earned a penalty stroke. Makenna Quigley stepped up to the mark for the attempt, but Houston came up with a big save, keeping Rochester in front.

Two minutes later, it happened again, when Molly DiCampli’s shot was headed in but deflected off a UR foot, awarding the visitors another stroke chance. Lynda Farinella subbed in for the attempt and converted into the low left corner of the cage, pulling Stevens even in the match.

As the teams headed into overtime, play opened up with only six field players on the field during the extra sessions. Stevens attacked early, but Houston saved Lauren Flynn and Sarah Korczukowski shot attempts to extend the game.

The clock wound down in the first OT with the Ducks earning three straight corners, but the ‘Jacket defense held off the pressure, sending the game to a second sudden-death overtime.

Rochester dominated the second overtime, taking all four shots and earning both corners in the period, but couldn’t break through for the winning goal.

Stevens shot first in the shootout, with Lynda Farinella connecting on the opening attempt. After Ballas was turned away by Dante, Korczukowski made it 2-0.

The next three attempts, two by UR and one by Stevens were missed and Flynn stepped up to the mark with a chance to win the game for the Ducks.

On her initial attempt the Stevens first-year was tripped up by Houston, leading to another penalty stroke being awarded. The extra chance paid off for her and the Ducks and she found the cage to earn send her team home with the victory.

Rochester remains home for its next match heading into next week, hosting Hamilton College on Wednesday evening at 7 pm.
