LOS ANGELES, CA – University of Rochester baseball rallied from down seven, scoring three in the eighth and four in the ninth to even the score at 7-all, before the game was called due to darkness in the Top of the 12th following two scoreless frames, and will be resumed following tomorrow’s doubleheader.

Occidental got the scoring started in the first inning, pushing a run across on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

The Tigers would add another in the second on a passed ball, and another in the fourth on Ari Solomon’s sacrifice fly, before Occidental would stretch its lead to five on Jonathan Marshall’s three-run blast in the bottom of the fifth.

Occidental would add one more in the seventh, taking advantage of a bases-loaded error by UR, but the ‘Jackets bullpen would clamp down, holding the Tigers to just two runs over the final six frames of the day.

Magnus Sivertson pitched an inning and a third out of the ‘pen, while Thomas Karpishin allowed just one run over an inning of work, as the ‘Jackets got going at the plate over the final two frames.

Trailing by six, UR began its rally in the top of the eighth. With one out, Joseph Rende slashed a double to left, and Colton Avera groundout to short, moving Rende to third. John Moses then singled to left to bring home the ‘Jackets first run of the game, before Josh Leadem smacked a two-run homer to center, scoring a pair to cut Occidental’s lead in half, down to 6-3.

And while the Tigers tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the frame on Nolan Upchurch’s RBI double, extending their lead to 7-3, Rochester got right back to it in the top of the ninth.

Luke Gregory led off with a hit-by-pitch and took second on a wild pitch, before Colby Cruser reached on an infield single, putting runners at the corners with nobody out. After Dylan Stezzi pinch ran for Cruser, Aaron Whitley grounded into a fielder’s choice, and Jackson Reed walked to load the bases for Rende, who drew another walk to make it a 7-4 Occidental lead.

Avera then knocked in a pair, scoring Reed and Whitley with a two-run double to cut the Tigers’ lead to just one, before Moses leveled the score at seven-all with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Rende. But Avera was caught in a rundown at third, and the Tigers and Yellowjackets headed to the bottom of the ninth, all tied at seven.

Thomas Blaydes, who relieved Karpishin midway through the eighth, made quick work of the Tigers in the ninth, getting a groundout and a pair of popouts to send things to extras.

Both teams left runners on in the tenth, with Mark Aaronsonworking around a one-out base runner to keep things tied at seven, and after UR left a leadoff runner on second in the 11th, Aaronson worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the frame to again keep things scoreless and send UR and Occidental to the 12th, where the game was suspended due to darkness.

Nolan Sparks made the start for Rochester, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits, walking three and striking out five over 5.0 innings pitched. Matthew Uytioco got the ball for Occidental, and allowed just four hits over seven innings for the Tigers.
