D’Youville Edges Redhawks In ECC Opener
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan University women’s basketball team staged a valiant comeback attempt in the fourth quarter but was unable to overcome D’Youville in its East Coast Conference opener on Wednesday night at the Voller Athletic Center.
The visiting Saints built an 11-point lead with 4:57 to play went on a 13-3 run to pull within one after a conventional three-point play by Georgia Haverlockwith 45 seconds to play, but D’Youville held Roberts scoreless the rest of the way to pull out a 54-51 victory.
Haverlock, a graduate student, scored a game-high 13 points to lead the Redhawks (2-3, 0-1 ECC). Junior Grace Dow registered her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds for Roberts.
Senior guard Danielle DiCintio sank a three-pointer from three-quarter court at the third-quarter buzzer to bring Roberts within four points, 37-33, but D’Youville (2-3, 1-0 ECC) outscored Roberts 12-5 in the first 3:03 of the fourth to go in front 49-38.
DiCintio and sophomore Marianna Freeman each added nine points for Roberts. DiCintio also led the Redhawks with four assists.
D’Youville forced 21 turnovers and held a 22-14 advantage in points in the paint.
Roberts returns to action on Saturday afternoon for an ECC game at Daemen at 2 p.m.
