University of Rochester cross country earns 5th place in yellow jacket invite recap from University of Rochester athletics website

The University of Rochester men’s cross country team saw its top-five runners place between 34th and 60th, separated by a little over 35 seconds, earning fifth place at the annual University of Rochester Yellowjacket Invitational at Genesee Valley Park on Saturday morning.
 
Overall, the Yellowjackets scored 173 team points and were fifth among 20 teams entered in the meet. UR also ended as the number two Division III school in the race, as Division I teams Cornell (15 points), Colgate (74 points) and Buffalo (130 points) finished as the first, second and fourth place teams, respectively. SUNY Geneseo was third on the team leaderboard, scoring 123 points.
 
The first UR runner was Nick Gaitanis in 34th place. He came through the chute in 26:32.2 over the 8-kilometer course.
 
Teammates Vishal Yalamanchili and Jonathan Sullowere 39th and 41st, respectively, ending just over one second apart. Yalamanchili crossed in 26:40.9, while Sullo’s time was 26:42.1.
 
Rounding out the top-5 for Rochester was James Catania in 58th place and Zach Spergel in 60th. Catania earned a time of 27:07.1, with Spergel crossing the finish line in 27:09.4.
 
Rochester’s two non-scoring displacers were Brendan McCollum in 62nd (27:11.4) and Sean Hendricks in 73rd (27:24.9).
 
Overall, 252 runners ran in the race, with three other Rochester runners earning top-100 finishes. Andy Freeman was 84th (27:34.7), Daniel Ford was 91st (27:44.4) and Nolan Goldthwaite was 95th (27:49.1).
 
UR’s next event is the annual Paul Short Cross Country Run, hosted by Division I Lehigh University on September 30.
