Saints Lead Wire-to-Wire over SUNY Geneseo for Third Consecutive Victory
The St. Lawerence University men’s basketball team rode a hot start and headed into their break on a good note, downing SUNY Geneseo in their last home game of the 2023 calendar year with a fitting 79-58 non-conference victory.
With the win, St. Lawrence improves to 6-3 on the season. Their 2023 was a notable one – including a Liberty League championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament. Their overall record ended as 20-8 across conference, non-conference and playoff play.
St. Lawrence also sits tied for third overall in the Liberty League standings with a 2-1 conference record. They are even with Clarkson, while they trail Hobart and Bard for the top spot on the table.
“I thought we played well down the stretch to finish off the calendar year, and we’re looking forward to recharge over the holidays,” said Chris Downs, the Saints’ head coach. “This break should help us continue our momentum over league play once we return to the court in January.”
The Saints led the game wire to wire for the second straight contest, taking an early lead over Geneseo and not looking back. They lead 12-4 and again by 19-7 around the halfway mark of the quarter, and the score ended up 39-28 at the end of the first.
After the break, the second half was a similar story – building their lead until it was ultimately its largest right at the end of the game. That came when the score was 79-57, right before Noah Fancher’s free throw cut the lead back down to 21 with 24 seconds to play, ending the game with that scoreline.
The Saints were led offensively by Adam Dudzinski, who narrowly missed out on a double double with a team-high 19 points and nine boards. Andrew Cowan also had nine rebounds, while adding 10 points, five blocks, and three assists. Trey Syroka and Aidan Macaulay shared the team lead in assists with six each.
Vassar and Bard await St. Lawrence after the break on Jan. 5 and 6, before St. Lawrence begins a stretch of four straight home games at Burkman Gymnasium later in the month.
